One month left of summer vacation and we still have a lot of things on our summer bucket list to get done. Truth be told we keep adding things to cross of as we are not doing very well getting to many of the original ideas. A few yes, but I think we were trying to be to ambitious. Good news though we are having a busy and fun summer, so in the end who cares what was on the list as long as everyone enjoyed themselves and are ready to start another school year. We still have a month and this week was a productive one and enjoyable one.
1.What we are eating (July 13 – July 19)
Sunday – Grilled Chicken & Pineapple on Brioche Rolls, Grilled Okra, and Watermelon
Monday – Milkshakes & Leftovers
Tuesday – Taco Salad
Wednesday – Gazpacho & Bread
Thursday – Tomato Mozzarella Salad, Grilled Sausage, Grilled Corn
Friday – Chopped Salad
Saturday – Light appetizer type meal before going to a baseball game.
2. Okra – Little Miss Mixture wanted to plant some seeds in my barrels, so you may recall I gave her some space. One of the items she picked was okra. Look at this the plant flowered and we have these growing.
3. Mixture – Little Miss Mixture had a friend over this week. She wanted to make it fun and special, so of course to her that meant fun JUNK FOOD. In fact when she asked for cinnamon roles her exact comment was ” if you make them, please do not make them healthy.” Hmm clearly she knows me well. I obliged and got her the store bought ones and made a mental note to try and make some healthier ones another time. True to her taste, Little Miss Mixture decided on a fun mixture for their evening snack. Clearly my love of mixture and creation of them is being passed on as this was not too bad Mr. Mixture and I found it quite tasty while we enjoyed our evening television as well.
4. Food Holidays – Did you see this article Bon Appetit published about National Food Holidays. Sorry Bon Appetit, but maybe there is a reason you are no longer arriving in my mailbox. We clearly do not have the same idea or love of all things food. How can you come down on foodies who embrace the little things and celebrate these fun created holidays. Of course someone created them that is how all the holidays have come about, but it gives everyone a day to feel special or something to look forward to, and I like the excuse to try a new recipe or an old favorite and indulge in good food. Maybe this is a great way to encourage some people (kids or picky adults) to try new foods.
Parent: “It is national eat a peach day? “Let’s have peaches”
Picky eater: “No”
Parent: “How can you NOT eat a peach.” You are NOT going to celebrate National eat a peach day.”
Picky eater: ” Okay I will try it. It is a national holiday”
So what if some are silly. Who is with me? Who is going to celebrate the little things in life?
5. Upcoming Holidays I hope to celebrate 7/25 National Hot Fudge Sundae Day 7/26 National Coffee Milkshake Day and National Dance Day 7/30 National Cheesecake Day 8/1 National Girlfriends Day 8/3 National Watermelon Day 8/5 National Waffle Day 8/9 My Anniversary 8/10 National S’mores Day 8/23 National Eat a Peach Day 8/31 National Trail Mix Day (Woo Hoo a day to celebrate Mixture, and I did not create it)
These are just a few of the fun days ahead. One could fill their whole calendar with things to celebrate. Come to think of it that might be the way to make a summer bucket list. Besides we have to eat each day, why not determine our menu based on celebrating the little things.
Happy Monday! Hope everyone has a good week and look for more recipes involving cherries to arrive this week as well as my love of Chopped.
